My name is Serah Shafer, and I spent my senior year of college at Barry University as a transfer student-athlete. I wanted to experience a life different from the one I had known for the past twenty years, and Barry gave me that opportunity. Throughout my courses, I was able to experience cultural diversity, particularly within my English classes, which is something I have not had the opportunity to experience previously. The professors in the English department foster an environment of inclusion and open dialogue, encouraging students to share their backgrounds and experiences through discussions and projects. Specifically in Dr. Landeros's class, we would sing and dance to different cultural music and practices. We sang sad songs, happy songs, and songs in different languages, and we would jump around to the music, partner dance, and play instruments. My favorite class was when we were all playing the claves, one student was playing the drums on the trash can, and we were all singing together. This was, without a doubt, my favorite part of being at Barry.
The English department is also very committed to student success. As a transfer senior-athlete, I faced the challenge of completing my degree within a single year while also finishing my final softball season. This was not easy, but the faculty supported me every step of the way. Dr. Gallo was a huge supporter of mine, and she helped me create a class schedule that fit my needs, working around my softball and work schedule, as well as helping me to get enough of my credits from Upper Iowa transferred to Barry in order to graduate on time. Athletically, my experience at Barry has been just as rewarding. I have had the privilege of competing alongside an amazing group of young women who are very passionate about softball. Being part of this team has been both inspiring and unforgettable.
Overall, I am incredibly grateful for everything Barry University has given me. From the faculty who supported me academically to the teammates who pushed me on the field, this experience has truly been a blessing in my life.
