Barry University School of Law is proud to host Commissioner Nicole Wilson’s Environmental Justice Symposium, a day of dialogue and collaboration focused on advancing environmental justice in today’s political climate. This event brings together leading voices in law, policy, and advocacy to address some of the most urgent environmental and social challenges facing our communities.

A Day of Insightful Discussion and Community Engagement

The Environmental Justice Symposium is designed to inform and inspire. Attendees will hear from experienced advocates, elected officials, legal scholars, and youth leaders who are shaping the future of climate and environmental policy in Florida and beyond.

Event Schedule Highlights

10:00 AM – Registration and Light Bites
Begin the day with refreshments and informal networking as you connect with students, faculty, legal professionals, and community leaders.

10:15 AM – Welcome Remarks
Commissioner Nicole Wilson and Dean Leticia M. Diaz of Barry Law will open the symposium with remarks on the importance of collaboration in environmental justice work.

10:45 AM – Panel Discussion #1: Environmental Policy in Motion – From Ideas to Implementation
This session features Sarah Elbardi (Congressman Frost’s Deputy Director), Representative Anna Eskamani, Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith, and Commissioner Wilson. Together, they will explore how policy ideas are translated into actionable legislation and lasting impact.

11:50 AM – Featured Speaker: Dr. Nadia B. Ahmad
A respected environmental law scholar, Dr. Ahmad will discuss some of today’s most critical climate justice challenges, with a focus on legal and community-based strategies for change.

12:30 PM – Lunch
Enjoy a complimentary lunch, generously sponsored by the Center for Earth Jurisprudence.

1:45 PM – Panel Discussion #2: Advocating for Change – Navigating Environmental Policy
This panel includes representatives from the Miccosukee Tribe, CLEO Institute, Save Split Oak, 1000 Friends of Florida, Live Wildly, and Common Sense Childbirth, Inc. Speakers will share insights on grassroots advocacy, environmental health, and the fight for policy equity.

2:45 PM – Youth Voices Spotlight
Local student and youth leaders will share how they’re organizing within their schools and communities to push for sustainable, just, and inclusive environmental policies.

4:00 PM – Keynote Address: Richard Grosso
Richard Grosso is President of Richard Grosso, P.A., based in Plantation, Florida. With 38 years of experience, he is a widely recognized public interest environmental lawyer and appellate advocate. His practice areas include federal and Florida environmental law, land use, constitutional and property rights law, and administrative governance. He offers legal services throughout Florida and Washington, D.C.

5:00 PM – Closing Remarks and Call to Action
Commissioner Wilson will close the day’s programming with a call to action, encouraging attendees to take the lessons learned and turn them into advocacy and impact in their own communities.

5:30 PM – Networking and Vendor Visits (Optional)
Stick around for informal networking, vendor visits, and continued conversation. Meet local organizations, advocacy groups, and community partners.
